Jej pravé meno je Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson a narodila sa 25.10.1984 v Santa Barbare v Kalifornii.Vyrastala na počúvaní kostolných piesní a spievala v kostole.V roku 2003 dokončila stúdium na Dos Pueblos High School a hned potom v jej 18 rokoch odišla do Los Angeles.Zmenila si priezvisko na Perry ,lebo Hudson sa podobá herečke Kate Hudson.Priezvisko Perry mala jej mama ked bola slobodná.Ako Katy dospievala objavila skupinu Queen a ako povedala bola to pre nu najvätšia inšpirácia.Medzi dalších spevákov ktorý ju ovplyvnili patria Alanis Morissette,skupina Heart,John Mitchell,skupina Incubus so svojim albumom Morning View.Niekoľko rokov chodila s frontmanom skupiny Gym Class Heroes-Travisom McCoyerom s ktorym sa minulý rok rozišla.
Svoje prvé CD vydala ako Katy Hudson v roku 2001 s názvom Red Hill Records.Toto CD však nezapadá do štýlu v ktorom dnes spieva.Obsahoval krestanské piesne.V roku 2004 pracovala pre nahrávacie štúdio The Matrix.Začala robit na svojom sólovom albume s Glenom Ballardom,ktorý pre nu niektoré piesne napísal.Album bol pripravený k vidaniu v roku 2005 a niektoré piesne boli zverejnené na MySpace Katy Perry.Jej rastúcu kariéru podporil článok v časopise Blender,kde sa vyjadrila že nieje typická krestanka a niektoré veci pri svojom dospievaní urobila zle.
Jedna piesen ktorú Katy nahrala vyšla na sountracku k filmu Sesterstvo cestujúcich gatí v roku 2005.Orok neskôr sa objavila v piesni skupiny P.O.D pod názvom Goodbye for Now.Otvorene tam hovorila o problémoch uprosted hudobného priemyslu,napríjklad o tom ako bola na začiatku svojej kariéry vyhodená z nahrávacieho štúdia.Toto zaujalo nahrávacie štúdio Virgin Records v čele s Jasonom Flomom,ktorý bol v čele Capitol Music Group,kde Kty od začiatku roku 2007 začala nahrávat.Odvtedy čo tu nahrala CD začala tu pracovat na sólovom albume.Na konci roku 2007 vydalo piesen Ur so Gay a videoklip k tejto piesni bol zverejnení na internete začiatkom roku 2008 na internete.Táto piesen bola veľmi úspešná.Odvtedy hrala v 2 seriáloch.17.júl 2008 vydala svoj album s názvom One of the boy.Jej prvý videokpi bol I Kissed a girl a mal veľkú úspešnost.9.9.2008 vydala svoj druhý videoklip k piesni Hot ´n´ cold.Bol tiež veľmi úspešný..
